Résumé

Dans cet article, le rôle du réchauffement diabatique estival dans la zone tropicale sur la localisation et la magnitude des jets streams (ou courant de jet) de la zone subtropicale et extratropicale est étudié. Notamment la relation entre le vent zonal extratropical, le vent méridional subtropical, et les schémas de radiation sortante tropicale de grande longueur d'onde (outgoing longwave radiation, OLR) sont examinés.

Il a été démontré que le champ de réchauffement (heating field), le vent méridional cross-equatorial (traversant l'équateur) et les maxima de vents zonaux hivernaux sont très fortement liés sur des échelles de temps annuelles et interannuelles. Ces facteurs indiquent que le réchauffement de l'hémisphère adjacent est au moins aussi important que l'orographie de l'hémisphère nord dans la détermination de la localisation et de la magnitude des jets streams d'ouest.

Du crédit est ajouté à cette conclusion en notant les associations similaires entre le schéma de réchauffement de l'hémisphère nord et la localisation ainsi que les variations du jet stream de l'hémisphère sud, qui sont moins clairement associés à l'orographie.

De plus, les changements interannuels dans la localisation et la magnitude du jet stream d'ouest sont fortement liés au phénomènes d'El Niño/Oscillation australe (El Niño/Southern Oscillation, ENSO). Ainsi, en plus de la relation bien connue de l'ENSO et de la circulation proche équatoriale ou zonale symétrique, il y a une forte association sur la même échelle de temps dans le courant cross-equatorial, ou composés asymétriques à propos de l'équateur.

Introduction

Au cours des deux décennies écoulées, il est devenu clair que la météorologie des deux hémisphères est interactive sur des échelles de temps synoptiques à interannuelles. Les liens peuvent se faire par la haute troposphère tropicale, grâce notamment aux westerlies (les vents d'ouest).

Les westerlies équatoriaux sont produits par les gradients de réchauffement longitudinaux le long de l'équateur et par la résultante de la circulation de Walker (Webster, 1973 ; Frederiksen & Webster, 1988). Chang (1977) suggère que le réchauffement différentiel des hémisphères pourrait aider à expliquer des phénomènes tels que les circulations asymétriques des moussons.

Webster et Chang (1988) ont montré que les variations longitudinales dans le courant équatorial induit par la circulation de Walker modifient sévèrement les caractéristiques des modes transitoires équatorial et extratropical. Plus encore, ils ont spéculé que l'état de variabilité basique détermine, sur une grande extension, la manière dans laquelle les extratropiques et les tropiques interagissent.

La question émergeante est donc de se demander s'il est possible que des phénomènes spécifiques dans un hémisphère soient influencés par des forçages spécifiques de l'autre. S'il existe déjà des exemples de variations de réchauffement se produisant sur des échelles interannuelles, on peut se demander quel effet ils ont effectivement sur les évènements de l'autre hémisphère.

Existe-t-il des relations entre la position et l'intensité du jet stream hivernal d'un hémisphère et le forçage dû au réchauffement dans l'autre hémisphère ?

Le jet stream serait une source des tempêtes extratropicales. Ainsi, des variations dans la position et l'intensité du jet stream pourraient avoir un impact significatif sur la météo de l'hémisphère hivernal.

Quoi qu'il en soit, les processus qui créent les jet streams ou définissent leur position et intensité, ainsi que d'autres éléments des extratropiques, sont depuis longtemps un sujet de considérable controverse.
